One of the most productive of its silver mines El Bote, still in production today, has records, which show a production of nearly $800,000,000 in silver between 1548 and 1867. The wealth generated from the area´s mines is evident in the elaborate mansions, beautiful churches and museums. Indeed, these attributes, along with historic infrastructure such as its aqueduct, garnered this city a UNESCO designation as a "World Cultural Heritage" in 1993.
